RNC cuts ties to the presidential debate commission
Background: The Commission on Presidential Debates has run the debates for presidential elections for three decades. Lately it has been criticized as having an anti-Republican bias.
Examples of bias: In 2020, The Trump campaign wanted the debates to be scheduled before the mail-in voting period. That request didn’t go through. Additionally, a mute button was announced after Trump interrupted Biden to press him on Hunter Biden’s business dealings. The new rule prevented candidates from interrupting each other.
Requests: For 2024, Republicans wanted fairer moderators and debates before early voting. They were unable to secure those demands and cut ties as a result.
It’s possible that presidential debates may not happen in 2024 under the new conditions; however, the RNC has expressed its commitment to free and fair debates.
Elon Musk was attacked for believing in free speech.
Background: Elon Musk is offering to buy Twitter at $43 billion. His goal is to restore free speech on the platform.
- Axios compared Elon Musk to a “supervillain” financing his “mischief-making.”
- In The Guardian, progressive-favorite Robert Reich compared Elon Musk to Putin and dictators for pursuing online free speech. He claimed it would be a “brave new nightmare” for everyone.
- In The Washington Post, Max Boot argued that Musk would destroy our democracy by fighting for less censorship, not more.
- Business Insider described Elon Musk’s bid as a “chilling new threat.”
Big picture: The attacks from the political left show how necessary online censorship is to them. Musk is seen as a threat not because he's a billionaire—Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook and Jeff Bezos's Washington Post are viewed favorably—but because he supports free speech.
